The University of Louisville and Mold :: Baltimore Mold Remediation

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

After finding mold in Miller Hall and closing the residence hall for the rest of the semester, University of Louisville officials were forced to relocate 270 students to temporary housing, including other university residence halls, nearby hotels, and even family homes in the Louisville area. Shuttle services were offered to students forced to live in the hotels or other properties.

Mold tests were performed in the university’s other residence halls, at which time it was determined that there would be no need to relocate students in other housing complexes. Then, on October 14th, mold remediators entered Miller Hall, removing all instances of mold and thoroughly cleaning the affected areas.

Miller Hall is scheduled to re-open next semester.

Poor Indoor Air Quality in Schools, affecting your Child’s Health

“The buildings continue to deteriorate, and we only have a small amount of dollars to spread to do just some minimal things,” said Drue Miles, the acting Superintendent in Reading, Pennsylvania.

“Schools are more densely occupied than office buildings, and children aren’t little adults. They’re uniquely vulnerable,” said Claire Barnett, founder and executive director of the Healthy Schools Network, a nonprofit group focused on environmental health in schools.

  • Studies estimate that more than 33% of all U.S. schools have indoor air problems, such as mold or dust, severe enough to cause respiratory issues.
  • A survey of school nurses found that 40% knew of students or faculty negatively affected by poor indoor air quality.
  • About 20% to 30% of people are susceptible to mold or dust, which can trigger allergic reactions.
  • On average, 1 out of every 10 students has asthma, causing them to miss at least 4 days of school annually. These asthma sufferers are more severely affected by poor indoor air quality.
  • 66% of teachers surveyed in Washington D.C. and more than 50% of teachers surveyed in Chicago reported either fair or poor indoor air quality at their schools.
  • More than 33% of teachers surveyed in D.C. and more than 25% of teachers surveyed in Chicago surveyed said they had suffered adverse health effects because of the school environment

The State of Virginia has Deregulated Mold Remediators :: Mold Remediation

The state of Virginia has regulated Mold Inspectors and Mold Remediators since 2001, when the duties of the Virginia Board of Asbestos, Lead, Mold, and Home Inspectors were expanded to include home inspectors and mold remediators / inspectors.

The Deregulation of Mold Remediators and Mold Inspectors

As part of Governor Bob McDonnell’s plan to streamline government, “needless licensing and regulatory requirements” have been eliminated, thus deregulating mold remediation and mold inspection.

“We identified three professions [Interior Designers, Hair Braiders, and Mold Remeidators / Mold Inspectors] that we believe are better served if no longer regulated by the state,” said McDonnell.

The plan also includes the elimination of two state agencies, the merging of seven state agencies into others, the elimination of 19 boards and commissions, and the merging of 23 boards and commissions to form 11 boards and commissions.

“In this tough economy, when families are struggling to make ends meet and business owners are facing declining revenues and tough choices, we simply cannot afford a government that just grows bigger and bigger with each passing year,” said McDonnell.

The Virginia legislature recently approved the McDonnell’s plan, which will go into effect on July 1st of this year.
