How much is Mold Remediation? FAQs answered by a Baltimore Mold Remediater

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

While often ignored by homeowners and business owners, shrugged off as a fuzzy annoyance on their walls or ceilings, mold can be a very dangerous organism. It not only attacks your building or home, slowly eating away at building materials, but mold can also negatively affect the health of your family, employees, or customers/clients. Some common health issues attributed to mold include:

  • Memory lapses
  • Fatigue
  • Digestive problems
  • Chronic aches and pains
  • Irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and skin
  • Sinus infections and sinusitis
  • Skin rashes
  • Upper and lower respiratory infections
  • Headaches
  • And more!

The key to avoiding the above issues is to deal with any mold outbreak in a timely manner. This will not only keep your home and family safe, but will also dramatically cut down on the cost of mold remediation. Conversely, the longer you wait to deal with mold, the longer the organism has to grow and infest your home, and the more money you will need to shell out for mold remediation and renovations.

And in case you were thinking you could save a few dollars by cleaning up your mold problem on your own…don’t. The only way to ensure mold has been completely removed from your home is to hire a professional mold remediation company.

So how much does mold remediation cost?

Well, that all depends on how quickly you address the mold problem in your home or business! So if you find any warning signs of mold, do not hesitate to call a mold inspection and remediation professional immediately.

After finding mold in Miller Hall and closing the residence hall for the rest of the semester, University of Louisville officials were forced to relocate 270 students to temporary housing, including other university residence halls, nearby hotels, and even family homes in the Louisville area. Shuttle services were offered to students forced to live in the hotels or other properties.

Mold tests were performed in the university’s other residence halls, at which time it was determined that there would be no need to relocate students in other housing complexes. Then, on October 14th, mold remediators entered Miller Hall, removing all instances of mold and thoroughly cleaning the affected areas.

Mold Remediation: It’s Serious Business

Saturday, August 18th, 2012

As a business owner or building manager, when you discover mold in your building, you have no choice but to call a professional mold remediation company. If not dealt with properly, mold can not only eat away at building materials, but mold can also adversely affect the health of your employees, clients, and/or customers.

Warning Signs of Mold

  • Black patches on walls, floors, ceilings, and other structures.
  • You may notice a strong musty, stale smell.
  • Inhabitants may exhibit health symptoms, such as allergic reactions, congestion, cough, sore throat, and much more.
  • Excess humidity and moisture. While not directly warnings signs of mold, they can be contributing factors of mold.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, contact your local mold remediation experts to come and access your unique situation.

The Mold Remediation Process

If it is determined that you have mold, the mold remediation professional will do the following:

  • Locate: Before mold remediation can begin, the full extent of the problem must be determined. If all instances of mold are not dealt with, the infestation will just worsen again.
  • Isolate: When agitated, mold spores travel through the air, spreading the infestation throughout the building. This is what makes mold so hard to deal with. And this is why the problem must be isolated and sealed off before remediation efforts can begin.
  • Remove: Remediation professionals will remove any affected materials, such as carpets, furniture, etc.
  • Clean: Once the mold infestation is located and isolated and all affected materials have been removed, the actual mold remediation can begin.

Poor Indoor Air Quality in Schools, affecting your Child’s Health

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been preaching the importance of good indoor air quality for your home or business, but did you know that the same rules apply to other institutions, as well, such as school? And with recent budget cuts, school air problems have only gotten worse.

“The buildings continue to deteriorate, and we only have a small amount of dollars to spread to do just some minimal things,” said Drue Miles, the acting Superintendent in Reading, Pennsylvania.

And, this continued decline in the indoor air quality of schools has led to an increase in hospitalizations for asthma and other respiratory problems.

“Schools are more densely occupied than office buildings, and children aren’t little adults. They’re uniquely vulnerable,” said Claire Barnett, founder and executive director of the Healthy Schools Network, a nonprofit group focused on environmental health in schools.

Facts and Statistics Regarding Poor Indoor Air Quality in Schools

  • Studies estimate that more than 33% of all U.S. schools have indoor air problems, such as mold or dust, severe enough to cause respiratory issues.
  • A survey of school nurses found that 40% knew of students or faculty negatively affected by poor indoor air quality.
  • About 20% to 30% of people are susceptible to mold or dust, which can trigger allergic reactions.
  • On average, 1 out of every 10 students has asthma, causing them to miss at least 4 days of school annually. These asthma sufferers are more severely affected by poor indoor air quality.
  • 66% of teachers surveyed in Washington D.C. and more than 50% of teachers surveyed in Chicago reported either fair or poor indoor air quality at their schools.
  • More than 33% of teachers surveyed in D.C. and more than 25% of teachers surveyed in Chicago surveyed said they had suffered adverse health effects because of the school environment

Poor Indoor Air Quality affects more than Health

Poor indoor air quality in schools can affect more than health. According to researchers, student performance is also tied to the quality of the air in schools.

“If you get an unhealthy building, you’re not going to have a successful school,” said Lily Eskelsen, vice president of the National Education Association, the largest teachers’ union in the United States.

Improve Indoor Air Quality with Professional Duct Cleaning :: HVAC Cleaning

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

As we told you last week, it is recommended that you have your air ducts and HVAC system cleaned every two years (more frequently if you have serious allergies, own pets, or smoke). This week, we are going to focus on several of the benefits of professional duct cleaning. These benefits include:

  1. Health Benefits: Dirty air ducts are often a major source of indoor air pollution, containing everything from bacteria, fungi, and dust to mold and other allergens. Contaminated ductwork allows these allergens to be spread throughout your home or business. This can lead to the development of chronic respiratory illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis, lung disease, headaches and migraines, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea, insomnia, and tiredness.
  2. Cleaner Home: Just imagine how much debris, dust, and dirt is circulated through your home. Cleaning your air ducts will help cut down on that and help you maintain a beautiful home.
  3. Improved Air Circulation: Without so many contaminants clogging the ductwork, your HVAC system will work more efficiently.
  4. Saves you Money: An efficient HVAC system means lower heating and cooling bills, which means additional money in your pocket.
  5. And more!

The State of Virginia has Deregulated Mold Remediators :: Mold Remediation

Friday, June 8th, 2012

The state of Virginia has regulated Mold Inspectors and Mold Remediators since 2001, when the duties of the Virginia Board of Asbestos, Lead, Mold, and Home Inspectors were expanded to include home inspectors and mold remediators / inspectors.

The Deregulation of Mold Remediators and Mold Inspectors

As part of Governor Bob McDonnell’s plan to streamline government, “needless licensing and regulatory requirements” have been eliminated, thus deregulating mold remediation and mold inspection.

“We identified three professions [Interior Designers, Hair Braiders, and Mold Remeidators / Mold Inspectors] that we believe are better served if no longer regulated by the state,” said McDonnell.

The plan also includes the elimination of two state agencies, the merging of seven state agencies into others, the elimination of 19 boards and commissions, and the merging of 23 boards and commissions to form 11 boards and commissions.

“In this tough economy, when families are struggling to make ends meet and business owners are facing declining revenues and tough choices, we simply cannot afford a government that just grows bigger and bigger with each passing year,” said McDonnell.

The Virginia legislature recently approved the McDonnell’s plan, which will go into effect on July 1st of this year.
