Explaining the Different Types of Water Damage

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Water damage can come from several different sources: plumbing problems, leaks, floods and even sewage related problems. So it is important to know what type of water damage you are dealing with before trying to tackle the problem yourself. This article from WaterDamageMoldCleanup.com defines each type of water damage, so you know how to identify what you are dealing with.

Water damage is categorized into 3 major groups, black, gray and white water damage.

1.   Clean Water Damage: This is the least hazardous of all three types of water damage, caused by white or clean water. While it is not hazardous, it should still be dealt with immediately as it may cause damage to your floors, walls, or other parts of your house.

2.   Gray Water Damage: This type of water damage comes from either the water left over from washing dishes or taking baths – which often contains soap residue and food particles – or from rain water. Gray water is considered water that could be used to water plants, but should not be used to drink.

3.   Black Water Damage: In most cases, black water comes from the sewer system. But any type of water that cannot be identified should be treated as black water. In other words until it is tested and its source identified it is officially black water, which should always be treated by a professional because it can be hazardous to the health when touched. Black water causes diseases such as hepatitis, malaria, cholera, scabies diarrhea and fluorosis.
