Water Damage Clean Up – Why Is A Fast Response So Important?

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

When your home floods, time is anything but on your side. Experts agree that water damage restoration MUST begin within the first 24-48 hours of flooding to prevent permanent damage and mold growth. This is why it is so important to contact a reliable restoration contractor who will get to the scene quickly, asses the damage, and begin the remediation process as soon as possible.

Step one is water removal and the removal of any damaged building materials. Once this is completed the drying process can begin. Drying equipment, high-efficiency dehumidifiers and commercial air movers all work together to pull any remaining moisture from the effected area. If this is not done quickly and thoroughly, mold growth is all but an inevitability.

So it is important to hire a reliable, qualified water damage restoration company, like Atlantic Environmental Solutions (AES).

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Restoration Services for Water Damage

Friday, October 7th, 2011

A flood can really disrupt your life. First there is the physical damage, then the emotional backlash, followed by insurance claims, clean up and restoration.

While no one can change what happened, a professional restoration company can help to make your recovery just a little bit easier. Even though your life has been turned upside down by a flood, you still need to start the clean up process as soon as possible. This is where a professional restoration company can really come in handy. They can handle every aspect of the clean up, repairs, and restoration while you focus on trying to put you life back together.

But, as with any professional service, there are drawbacks. So we have put together a list of the advantages and the disadvantages of professional water damage restoration companies.

 Advantages

  •  Efficient and speedy clean up and restoration
  • You and your family will have a shorter waiting time to go back to your normal life
  • Professional restoration will lessen the time for secondary damages caused by water to set in – mildew, mold, pests, etc.
  • When you go back to your home, you will be sure that it has been certified safe and sound for re-occupancy

Disadvantages

  • Cost: Prepare to have at least a thousand dollars or more to pay for the cost of the services and the repairs. But if you have the right homeowners insurance policy, most of these, if not all of these costs will be offset.

As you can clearly see, the advantages of a professional restoration company clearly outweigh the disadvantages. So if you feel you could benefit from a professional water damage restoration company or if you have any questions, please contact Atlantic Environmental Solutions by calling 877-296-6653 or click here today!

Water Damage Restoration by a Professional Contractor :: Atlantic Environmental Solutions

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Water damage is an inevitability. Over the life of a property, it will experience water damage at one stage or another. Some instances will be small and easily fixable – a leaky faucet or overflowing sink – while others may require the assistance of a professional water damage restoration contractor – backed up toilets, broken pipes, flooded basements, etc.

There are four categories of water damage restoration:

•           Category 1 and category 2 are the least problematic as they are water from relatively clean sources, such as an open faucet or a broken washing machine or dishwasher.

•           Category 3 and category 4 are very problematic because the water will be infected with a lot of microbes, bacteria and fungi.

The latter categories deal with what is known as black water, which comes from sources like backed up toilets, sewer lines, sea water, and river water, just to name a few. You should never attempt a do-it-yourself restoration project involving any of the above situations. These all require the use of a special chemical based agent that will remove the bacteria and fungi from your property.

Other advantages to hiring a professional restoration company include:

•           Fast response times

•           Extra help with insurance claims

•           Cost effectiveness

•           Sometimes it takes a professional just to locate the source of a leak or other problem. A professional restoration company will be able to use infrared cameras to identify the cracked pipe without having to break down walls or other construction materials.

What Professional Water Restoration Service Can Do For Your Home

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

There is no way to truly prepare yourself for a home flood. The only thing you can do is make sure you are properly educated about water damage restoration and repair so that you can deal with the ramifications of flood damage. Hopefully you will never have to act upon this knowledge, but it is better to be prepared now than to scramble for answers in the face of adversity.

One of the most important things to know is that a do-it-yourself water damage restoration is more than likely not going to suffice.  Not only can this expose you to harmful bacteria and other contaminants associated with floodwater, but, without the help of a professional, you will be unable to sufficiently rid your home of moisture.

The only way to ensure your home is completely restored to its pre-flood glory is to enlist the services of a professional water restoration company. Every water restoration service company would start out with the same essential procedure:

  1. Extract all water from basement
  2. Remove building materials that are badly damaged  ie: carpet, padding, drywall, insulation( in some cases depended upon type of water and severity of flood)
  3. Clean compromised area
  4. Apply anti-microbial
  5. Set-up drying equipment

Mold in Your Workplace

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

You are exposed to molds on a daily basis. They are in the air you breathe and grow almost anywhere and everywhere. But sometimes these molds grow so excessively in areas, like your workplace, that they can cause different types of illness.

Mold can cause symptoms similar to hay fever, the common cold, or the flu, while also aggravating asthma and other respiratory disorders. While most health disorders are temporary, excessive exposure can result in more serious conditions. This is why it is important to deal with mold outbreaks as soon as they are discovered.

Even if you cannot see mold, you may notice a mildew or earthy smell. This is almost always an indication of a mold outbreak. Mold may be found indoors on wet/damp walls, carpets, ceilings, and in ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

So if you and your coworkers are experiencing any unexplained medical problems (be sure to see a doctor), or if you have discovered or think you have discovered a mold outbreak in the workplace, it is time to call a professional mold remediation service.

Mold should be removed right away and while the average do-it-yourselfer can address small mold cleanups, a professional should be brought in to handle larger outbreaks.

Atlantic Environmental Solutions (AES) is a certified inspection, remediation and consulting company with the expertise to help clients quickly and affordably correct indoor air quality issues resulting from mold, water intrusion, fire, sewage, and more. For nearly a decade, our consultative approach and proven methodologies have helped residential and commercial customers throughout Maryland and Washington, DC to resolve even the most difficult environmental problems.

10 Ways to Prevent Mold Damage in your Home

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

You know all the facts. Mold is both a health risk and it can seriously damage your home. And you know that mold removal can often be an expensive process. What you may not know is how you can minimize and even eliminate mold growth by controlling the moisture in your home.

This article from HouseLogic.com will help. It provides 10 ways to control and combat mold in your home.

1.   Eliminate Clutter: Clutter blocks airflow and prevents your HVAC system from circulating air. Furniture and draperies that block supply grilles cause condensation. All this moisture creates microclimates in your home that welcome and feed mold growth.

2.   Control indoor climate: To prevent moisture problems, and maximize energy efficiency, set the thermostat at 78 degrees F.

3.   Shut windows and doors when AC is on: When you open windows and doors, you let air conditioning escape, waste money, and invite humid air into your cooler home: This causes condensation, which mold loves.

4.   Properly size your AC unit: Install an HVAC unit that is just right. For guidance, call an HVAC professional.

5.   Monitor humidity: An indoor humidity monitor will help you keep track of moisture levels that, ideally, fall between 35% and 50% relative humidity.

6.   Evaluate your AC: If you get a high humidity reading, first make sure your air conditioning is doing its job. Is it set to the proper temperature? Is it cycling on and off periodically? Does it blow cold air when it reaches the set point? Are coils clean?

7.   Look for standing water: If the air conditioner isn’t the issue, search for standing water or chronic dampness that is increasing indoor humidity and providing a lovely environment for mold.

8.   Cover crawl space: Ground water seeping into crawl spaces can add gallons of moisture vapor into your house every day. The simplest defense is to cover crawl space floors with a plastic vapor barrier.

9.   Add a dehumidifier: A dehumidifier removes excess moisture from the air. It is that simple.

10. Call a professional: When all else fails, or if you would just rather a professional handle everything, call a mold remediation specialist.

Atlantic Environmental Solutions (AES) is a certified mold inspector interior contractor, dedicated to restoring indoor air-quality and environmental conditions for homes and businesses in Maryland and Washington DC.
