Sewage Seeping In Your Basement Requires A Professional

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

After a long day at work, the last thing you want to come home to is a flooded basement. But it could be worse; that flood could be caused by a backed up sewer pipe, meaning raw sewage is seeping into your basement. If this is the case, the last thing you have to worry about is water damage. Sewage contains bacteria and other microorganisms that can cause serious health issues for you and your family. Even if the water doesn’t appear to be dirty, it can contain up to three million bacteria per teaspoon!

So if you are ever the unfortunate victim of a home flood caused by a damaged, clogged, or broken sewer pipe, call a professional water and sewage cleanup company – like Atlantic Environmental Solutions – as soon as possible. They will not only be able to clean up the mess, but they will also sanitize and deodorize your home, restoring it to its former glory.

A professional sewage remediation company will do the follow:

Remove the sewage and standing water.

  1. Dry carpets and furniture and remove anything beyond repair.
  2. Steam clean and disinfect the affected area.
  3. Dry ceilings and walls with specialized equipment.
  4. Remove all excess moisture from the damaged area.
  5. Deodorize. This is especially essential in sewage restoration.
  6. Inspect for mold.
  7. Remove mold (if needed).

Before you know it, your home will be as good as new. This is as long as you trust your home restoration to a company with years of experience, like Atlantic Environmental Solutions.

Sewage damage is hazardous. If left untreated, it is possible for the bacteria to be transmitted throughout your home or business by simple contact with clothing or shoes. A fast, complete response to reduce health risks is essential. Atlantic Environmental Solutions (AES) can take action immediately, leaving a clean, sanitary environment for your family.

For the last five years, Atlantic Environmental Solutions has been providing efficient, reliable emergency water extraction / removal services for everything from natural disasters – such as flooding following heavy rains – to everyday problems like washing machine overflows and broken water heaters.

Water Damage Clean Up – Why Is A Fast Response So Important?

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

When your home floods, time is anything but on your side. Experts agree that water damage restoration MUST begin within the first 24-48 hours of flooding to prevent permanent damage and mold growth. This is why it is so important to contact a reliable restoration contractor who will get to the scene quickly, asses the damage, and begin the remediation process as soon as possible.

Step one is water removal and the removal of any damaged building materials. Once this is completed the drying process can begin. Drying equipment, high-efficiency dehumidifiers and commercial air movers all work together to pull any remaining moisture from the effected area. If this is not done quickly and thoroughly, mold growth is all but an inevitability.

So it is important to hire a reliable, qualified water damage restoration company, like Atlantic Environmental Solutions (AES).

How to Find Quality Mold and Water Damage Specialists – Going for Expertise and Competency

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Water damage in your home can cause a number of problems, including mold growth. Because of this, properly addressing water damage in a timely manner is crucial. Mold and water damage can wreak havoc on your home, eating away at building materials and compromising your indoor air quality.

While you may be tempted to try and clean up your home yourself, the only way to truly ensure that your home is restored to its pre-water damaged state is to enlist the help of a certified mold and water damage specialist. To find a qualified remediation expert, follow these guidelines:

Certification: The first thing you need to do when looking for a mold and water damage specialist is to see if they are certified in the fields of inspection and restoration.

•           For damage specialists, check with the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification.

•           For mold remediation, it is best to choose a contractor related to various organizations, like the National Association of Mold Remediators and Inspectors.

Experience: Make sure your mold remediator or water damage expert has plenty of experience in their field. These tasks both require a ton of training and experience.

Quotes: After an inspection of your home, be sure to ask for a quote. Not all mold outbreaks and water damage problems are created equal. Some require a day to clean, others several days. Because of this, the price of water damage restoration and mold remediation will vary depending on the severity of your specific problem.

You should try to get quotes from at least 3 different specialists.

Ask Questions: Do they guarantee their work? Do they offer any type of warranty? Do they isolate rooms? Do they take air samples? If so, where do they send them? Is the laboratory reputable?

Water damage and mold outbreaks are both serious problems that require special attention. So be sure you are employing a company that is up to the task, a company like Atlantic Environmental Solutions!

Atlantic Environmental Solutions (AES) offers certified mold inspection and removal services to homes and businesses in Maryland and DC. And for the last five years, AES has also been providing efficient and reliable emergency water extraction / removal services for everything from natural disasters – such as flooding following heavy rains – to everyday problems like washing machine overflows and broken water heaters.

Water Damage Restoration – Common Mistakes That Will Be Avoided By Professional Contractors

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Dealing with a home flood can be an extremely devastating experience. This is only compounded when homeowners attempt to deal with the restoration work on their own.

Water damage restoration requires so much more than simply removing the water and drying your property. Yet, in an attempt to save money, countless homeowners attempt a do-it-yourself restoration every year. As a result, these homeowners often end up spending more money fixing their own mistakes than they would have spent on a professional water damage restoration.

 These common mistakes include:

  •  Waiting too long: Even waiting a few short hours to deal with a leak or a full-fledged flood can be the difference between a successful restoration and a disaster. This lapse in time could result in hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of extra expenses. A professional will be able to get to work on your water damage restoration as soon as you call them. So don’t delay; call a water damage restoration specialist as soon as you have discovered a problem.
  • Lack of expertise and proper equipment: Proper water damage restoration requires a great deal of knowledge, not to mention the right equipment. There are four stages of water damage, each with its own restoration requirements. Would you be able to tell the difference between a category 2 and a category 4 situation? More importantly, do you even have the right equipment to deal with these problems? The answer to both questions is probably not.

Additionally, certain categories of water may carry dangerous bacteria and microbes that can cause many types of diseases and health hazards. This type of water requires a special EPA certified chemical and should only be dealt with by a professional.

Excess Water Removal

Friday, October 14th, 2011

A flood can leave your home in ruins.

But you don’t have time to sulk and dwell on what has happened. You need to take action.

The first step is to remove excess water from your home. This should only be done by a professional and should be addressed as soon as possible. Every minute your home stays submerged in water, the more damage it will incur. Removing excess water will hasten the drying process and lessen the opportunity for mold and mildew growth, pest infestation, and further structural damage.

You should never attempt a do-it-yourself restoration.  The floodwater may be infected with microbes, bacteria and fungi. If this is the case, you are dealing with what is known as black water, which comes from sources like backed up toilets, sewer lines, sea water, and river water, just to name a few. Dealing with black water requires the use of a special chemical based agent that will remove the bacteria and fungi from your property.

So if you find yourself dealing with the aftermath of a flood, put your home in the hands of a company that can properly deal with the damage. Contact Atlantic Environmental Solutions by calling 877-296-6653 or click here today!

Symptoms of Black Mold Poisoning

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Many molds are pretty harmless, but others, like black mold (also known as toxic mold), can be dangerous. Black mold is a type of fungi that grows on anything – from walls, wood, inside air conditioners, clothes, food, carpets, etc. – in humid/damp areas with very little light.

This article from Buzzle.com outlines the signs of Black Mold, symptoms of Black Mold poisoning and tips for controlling Black Mold.

What are the signs of Mold?

  1. Moisture on the surfaces: Mold loves moisture. It is one of the key components of mold growth.
  2. Stains on the wall: Yellowish stain, due to moisture, can greatly help initial mold growth. If you start to see greenish, blackish or brownish patches sprout up, that is probably mold.
  3. Odor: A musty odor almost always indicates mold growth.
  4. Respiratory system response in the people: If anyone in your houshold begins to develop respiratory problems (allergies, asthma, etc.), then in that case there is a possibility of high mold growth.
  5. Poisoning due to mold: Poisoning due to the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) formed by mold is one of the most prominent sign of potential mold growth.

Symptoms of black mold poisoning:

o    Uneasiness in respiration

o    Headaches

o    Cough

o    Red eyes

o    Development of rashes and hives on skin

o    Nausea

o    Memory loss

o    In some cases, people experience bleeding in lungs

o    Lethargy

o    Dizziness

o    Lack in concentration

o    Problem caused due to irritation in mucous membranes

o    Asthma

o    Allergic reactions (such as itching of nose, runny nose etc.) of respiratory and/or nervous system etc

o    Irregularity in blood pressure

o    Damaged digestion and respiratory system

o    Infections of urinary track, problems in urination etc.

o    Pain in liver and other internal organs

o    High level or prolonged exposure to mold can lead to infertility in the patient

How mold can be controlled? (Tips for controlling mold problem)

o    Moisture is one of the most important factor for the growth of mold. By making it sure that the level of moisture is under check you can keep molds at bay. (Relative humidity i.e. RH can help in finding out when you need to dehumidify your building/house)

o    If there is any water leakage/intrusion, pipe leak, roof leak, condensation problem etc; it should be prevented first.

o    Ensure the air conditioners, HVAC systems, and air/ventilation ducts are clean. Normally mold formed in these systems are more dangerous as it easily escapes the human eye inspection.

o    Bathrooms are the most prone places for mold formation and growth. The tiles, curtains and appliances inside the bathrooms should be properly cleaned/removed in order to avoid mold formation.

o    If possible, use air purifiers to cleanse the air inside your house. Air purifiers can help in reducing the airborne particles of mold spores.

o    Now a day, there are many paints/anti mold products available in market that can resist moisture and/or mold at certain level. Using such products can also help in prevention of mold.

Mold is nothing to play around with. If you think you have the early signs of mold, contact a professional mold remediation service as soon as possible. If you have any questions, contact Atlantic Environmental Solutions by calling 877-296-665 or click here today!

What To Do After Your House Has Flooded

Monday, May 16th, 2011

If you have ever been a flood victim, you know just how devastating the whole process can be. It takes both an emotional and a financial toll on you and your loved ones. One way to avoid some of that heartache is to be prepared. Nothing is worse than not knowing what to do in an emergency situation. You feel trapped and powerless. But one way to gain some of that power back is to know what to do in the case of a home flooding.

This article from WaterDamageMoldCleanUp.com explains the necessary steps you need to take if your home is ever flooded.

1. File a Claim: People who experience flooding and have flood insurance should call their insurance agent as soon as possible after flooding occurs to file a claim. It’s a good idea to take pictures showing the floodwaters in the house and then to take pictures again after the flood waters recede. These should be shown to the insurance adjuster when he/she comes by to assess the damages.

2. Staying Safe: Health and safety are primary considerations after floodwater damage. Any time a home is flooded it should be checked for structural damage before anyone reenters it. It’s important that electricity be turned off. The electrical wiring and heating and cooling systems should be checked to avoid the risk of electrocution. Gas should also be turned off and should not be turned back on until you make sure there are no gas leaks. If gas is smelled authorities should be called immediately. After flooding, it’s important to listen for boil water advisories to make sure the water is safe to use. Finally, it’s important to be up to date on vaccinations because floodwaters are contaminated with bacteria.

3. Cleaning Up: Cleaning up after flooding is quite a chore. In order to avoid additional damage to the foundation, remaining water should be pumped out slowly. The remaining mud must then be shoveled out. All food and toiletry items that have come in contact with the floodwater should be thrown out. Next, it’s time to decide what is salvageable and what needs to be thrown away. As a final measure, the home and all salvageable items need to disinfected with a bleach solution and dried out. For extensive instructions on how to clean up after flooding see this article: Flood Damage Clean Up

4. Fixing Up: Once the home has been disinfected and has dried out, it’s time to make repairs and refurnish it. The number of repairs needed depends on the amount of damage. Carpet and sheetrock always have to be replaced. Oftentimes floors buckle and must be redone. Furniture that could not be salvaged will have to be repurchased. For extensive instructions on how to restore water damaged furniture see this article: Flood Damage Repair
