Mold Remediation: It’s Serious Business

Saturday, August 18th, 2012

As a business owner or building manager, when you discover mold in your building, you have no choice but to call a professional mold remediation company. If not dealt with properly, mold can not only eat away at building materials, but mold can also adversely affect the health of your employees, clients, and/or customers.

Warning Signs of Mold

  • Black patches on walls, floors, ceilings, and other structures.
  • You may notice a strong musty, stale smell.
  • Inhabitants may exhibit health symptoms, such as allergic reactions, congestion, cough, sore throat, and much more.
  • Excess humidity and moisture. While not directly warnings signs of mold, they can be contributing factors of mold.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, contact your local mold remediation experts to come and access your unique situation.

The Mold Remediation Process

If it is determined that you have mold, the mold remediation professional will do the following:

  • Locate: Before mold remediation can begin, the full extent of the problem must be determined. If all instances of mold are not dealt with, the infestation will just worsen again.
  • Isolate: When agitated, mold spores travel through the air, spreading the infestation throughout the building. This is what makes mold so hard to deal with. And this is why the problem must be isolated and sealed off before remediation efforts can begin.
  • Remove: Remediation professionals will remove any affected materials, such as carpets, furniture, etc.
  • Clean: Once the mold infestation is located and isolated and all affected materials have been removed, the actual mold remediation can begin.

Unfortunately, many basements have moisture problems, which can lead to mold. This cannot only be damaging to the structure of your home, but also your health.  Mold has been linked to several health disorders, including chronic headaches, asthma / breathing problems, allergies, depression, attention deficit disorder, cold, flu, pneumonia, skin infections, and much more.

For all of these reasons, you can see how important it is to make sure your basement is free of harmful mold before beginning any construction project.

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Has your basement developed a smelly, musty odor? Well, the smell could be the result of mold or mildew. Because of this, it is important to call your local mold remediation specialists to further examine your situation.

Mold can be detrimental in several ways, including:

  • Mold has been linked to a variety of health issues, including asthma, allergies, rashes and sinus infections to pneumonia, skin infections, and much more!
  • Mold can damage to your home, slowly eating away at building materials like wood, cement, and drywall.

Mold remediation is important to not only eliminate the overbearing, musty smell from your basement, but also to keep your family safe and healthy.

The Mold Remediation Process

  1. Locating the Problem: What is causing the mold outbreak? Is there a leaky pipe? Is there a leaky window? How is excess moisture making its way into your basement?
  2. Isolating the Contaminated Area: Mold spores easily travel through the air when agitated. This is why it is crucial to seal off the contaminated area to prevent the spread of mold to other areas of the home.
  3. Removing affected Materials: If materials, such as carpets and furniture, have been affected by mold, there items must be removed and professionally cleaned.

Improve Indoor Air Quality with Professional Duct Cleaning :: HVAC Cleaning

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

As we told you last week, it is recommended that you have your air ducts and HVAC system cleaned every two years (more frequently if you have serious allergies, own pets, or smoke). This week, we are going to focus on several of the benefits of professional duct cleaning. These benefits include:

  1. Health Benefits: Dirty air ducts are often a major source of indoor air pollution, containing everything from bacteria, fungi, and dust to mold and other allergens. Contaminated ductwork allows these allergens to be spread throughout your home or business. This can lead to the development of chronic respiratory illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis, lung disease, headaches and migraines, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea, insomnia, and tiredness.
  2. Cleaner Home: Just imagine how much debris, dust, and dirt is circulated through your home. Cleaning your air ducts will help cut down on that and help you maintain a beautiful home.
  3. Improved Air Circulation: Without so many contaminants clogging the ductwork, your HVAC system will work more efficiently.
  4. Saves you Money: An efficient HVAC system means lower heating and cooling bills, which means additional money in your pocket.
  5. And more!

You can improve the indoor air quality of your home or business with Atlantic Environmental Solutions (AES), your qualified source of air duct cleaning for dryer vents, heating / air conditioning systems, ductwork and more! Our trained professionals dispose of the collection of dust, mold spores, pollen, and insect remains, which inevitably accumulate in ductwork over time.

The State of Virginia has Deregulated Mold Remediators :: Mold Remediation

Friday, June 8th, 2012

The state of Virginia has regulated Mold Inspectors and Mold Remediators since 2001, when the duties of the Virginia Board of Asbestos, Lead, Mold, and Home Inspectors were expanded to include home inspectors and mold remediators / inspectors.

The Deregulation of Mold Remediators and Mold Inspectors

As part of Governor Bob McDonnell’s plan to streamline government, “needless licensing and regulatory requirements” have been eliminated, thus deregulating mold remediation and mold inspection.

“We identified three professions [Interior Designers, Hair Braiders, and Mold Remeidators / Mold Inspectors] that we believe are better served if no longer regulated by the state,” said McDonnell.

The plan also includes the elimination of two state agencies, the merging of seven state agencies into others, the elimination of 19 boards and commissions, and the merging of 23 boards and commissions to form 11 boards and commissions.

“In this tough economy, when families are struggling to make ends meet and business owners are facing declining revenues and tough choices, we simply cannot afford a government that just grows bigger and bigger with each passing year,” said McDonnell.

The Virginia legislature recently approved the McDonnell’s plan, which will go into effect on July 1st of this year.

New York Court of Appeals Verdict Regarding Mold Exposure & Illness

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

In a 3-2 decision, an appeals court in New York held that trial court made a mistake when it dismissed a suit brought by tenant Brenda Cornell against the owners of a Manhattan apartment building. It was found that Cornell experience “ill-health effects,” including dizziness, a rash, congestion, and other symptoms, as the result of mold growth in her apartment. She lived in this apartment for six years, from 1997-2003.

The appeals court found that “the scientific evidence shows that exposure to molds, particularly the types of molds whose presence in plantiff’s apartment was confirmed by sampling, i.e., aspergillus/penicillum, stachybotrys and chaetoium, can cause the types of ill effects experienced by plaintiff.”

This ruling clears the way for other such suits based on claims of illness brought on by mold exposure. In fact, Morell Berkowitz, the plaintiff’s lawyer, said that this decision has “tremendous significance” for others, like Cornell, who believe their health has been negatively affected by mold growth.
